Letter of protest to the President of the European Commission
Mr. Jose Manuel Barroso

Dear President of the European Commission, Mr. Barroso,

We the citizens of Macedonia are very satisfied that you took the time and came to visit our country, Macedonia. It is a great honor and pleasure to us when a President of the European Commission is the guest of our political and state leadership of our country in order to accelerate the integration process of our country and entry into the big European family in the European Union, where they and we belong. Macedonia is always open for your visit as well as presence and cooperation with all MEPs and EU Ambassador. Our country, the Republic of Macedonia, is a generous, hospitable country with friendly people ready for cooperation in every sector of the European integration.

Macedonia is a country with a high degree of culture and great cultural and historical heritage which doesn’t only belong to our country but the entire European continent. The citizens of Macedonia, the Macedonians and the members of the other ethnic groups are people with highly developed national and cultural awareness. The wholeness of our Macedonian nation is in the wholeness of our culture, our language and the Macedonian Church.

We, the citizens of Macedonia, are very disappointed in you, Mr Barroso, as a President of the European Commission because during your visit to our country never once did you officially refer to us by our Constitutional name Republic of Macedonia, nor did you mention the word Macedonian. It is an example of the greatest violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of all the citizens of Macedonia, guaranteed by the UN. With that you openly encourage anti-European sentiment among the citizens of our country, the Macedonians, and the other ethnic communities who live and come from R. Macedonia.

The European Parliament on Thursday approved the Resolution on the progress of our country, the Republic of Macedonia, which once again reaffirmed the need for immediate opening of negotiations with the European Union as a strong incentive to continue reforms in the country to fulfill the Copenhagen criteria for EU membership. But just as in previous Resolutions adopted in the past 5 years, and now it is a trend of denial of Macedonia, the Macedonian people, culture, history, identity by actively avoiding the use of the term "Macedonian" in the descriptions of our country R. Macedonia in the reports.

The novelty in the latest Resolution is the intended omission of the name of our country and the Macedonian language. The basis of the Macedonian identity is the Macedonian language, which is confirmed by the UN as Macedonian. The UNTERM data base is as nomenclature specific of all the countries members of the UN that is translated into 6 languages. There, the Macedonian language was confirmed as the language spoken in Macedonia since April 8, 1993.

We, the Macedonians, are deeply disturbed and disappointed by the appointment of the Macedonian language in the report, not as a Macedonian, but as the "official language", the "official language" and the "local language". The active avoidance of the use of the term Macedonia by you and by all MEPs, ambassadors and other representatives of all European institutions is deeply offensive for all our fellow citizens of our country the Republic of Macedonia.

That what you are doing and other EU Institutions doesn’t leave any room for progress for our country, R. Macedonia and her bright future as a new member state of the European Union, because it will bring losing of our identity as Macedonians. And we Macedonians don’t like that.
So Let it serve your honor.

Sincerely,
Citizen of the Republic of Macedonia
