It is time for Australia to say Macedonia

Dear Members of the Victorian Parliament

Since the establishment of official diplomatic relations on 20.10.1995, Australia unfairly refers to my fatherland Macedonia with the temporary artificial reference, instead of its true, historical and constitutional name.

This negative foreign policy of Australia towards Macedonia since the early 1990’s is not the result of historical facts and fairness, but the powerful Australian - Greek lobby groups that are negatively orientated towards everything that is Macedonian.

Although the reasons for such imposed foreign policy of Australia towards Macedonia are public secret, they were officially confirmed from the great advocate for the appointment of Macedonia under the provisional reference, foreign minister of Australia - Gareth Evans. As President of the International Crisis Group during a visit to Macedonia on 15th October 2006, he said (Source - Utrinski Vesnik, 16 October 2006):

-"The Row (for the name Macedonia) is a bizarre and unsustainable. I hope that other European countries will gather the courage to do what the United States did."

What the United States did, was the recognition of Macedonia under its true, historical and constitutional name, so Evans’s hope is that some European country will also recognize Macedonia under its true, historical and constitutional name. In fact, our ultimate hope is that Australia will gather strength and courage to look the truth in the eyes, and to recognize Macedonia under its true, historical and constitutional name.

Over 130 countries worldwide including Canada, Brazil, Russia, India, China, etc. recognize MACEDONIA under its true, historical and constitutional name.

The denial of the name MACEDONIA is historically unjustified, especially for Australia. Australia and its citizens have always addressed MACEDONIA under its natural historic name – MACEDONIA, even before MACEDONIA became independent from the Yugoslav federation*. Official Australia should follow this practice and recognize Macedonia as ‘Macedonia’ without artificially invented adjectives and suffixes.

The official denial of the name MACEDONIA by Australia should stop once and for all. The creator of this Australian foreign policy himself, the Foreign Minister of Australia - Gareth Evans, is not using anymore the temporary artificial reference when referring to MACEDONIA, but refers to it by its real, historical and constitutional name - MACEDONIA, which he showed on several occasions.

Australia as a country that highly values human rights and freedom, should finally put an end to its imposed negative policy towards the Macedonian name, which strongly affects and offends all Macedonians worldwide. Democracy is the right of each nation to choose a name for their country. Australia, like every other country in the world should and must respect the voice of the Macedonian people, which for centuries have called the country by the name of MACEDONIA. Do human rights apply to everyone except for us Macedonians?

The formal legal name of Macedonia (Republic of Macedonia) was freely, democratically and officially elected by its citizens in a referendum for independence on the 8th of September 1991. But decades before, when the country was a part of the Yugoslav federation was formally and legally named P.R. Macedonia (1946) and S.R. Macedonia (1963).

It is time for Australia to stop being a hostage to Greek nationalistic politics and stop referring to this peaceful European country with artificially grafted name. It is time for Australia to support the truth and to recognise Macedonia under its true historical and constitutional name.

Dear Members of the Victorian Parliament stand on the side of truth, and help us stop the injustice towards Macedonia and the Macedonian name. Now is the right time for Australia to make the right move and say - MACEDONIA! – (loud & clear)
